Sardinia (Sardegna)
Notable towns in this region include

- Nuoro
- Oristano
- Sassari
The island of Sardinia is surrounded by one of the most spectacular coastlines in the Mediterranean. The interior is a mix of rolling uplands, broad valleys and rugged mountains.
Sardinia has been described as a place "left out of time and history" but it the Sardinians seem to have more time and history than much of Europe. The legacy of countless invasions is evident in the languages and traditions of the island but it has always a place unto itself. Dotted arond the region are the amazing pre-historic remains of the Nuraghic people. These people who inhabited the area between 1800 and 300 BC left no written record of their culture and so have remained much of a mystery.
Please note that tourism has only been developed in some parts of the island and so facilities can be either very expensive or very primitive. A motorhome or rental car would be an ideal way to explore the region.
