Rome may be the caital city but there is much more to do and see in Lazio. for the active water sports, skiing, hill walking and climbing abound. To the east of Rome is Rieti, where you can visit the tiny monasteries St. Francis built and to the north is the homeland of the Etruscans where you can visit the painted underground tombs or explore the stone tumuli.
